Younger Women's Cancer Support Group

A community for younger women affected by cancer — a place to ask questions, vent, socialise and support each other, so no one goes through it alone.

About the group

A place to belong

The group was set up to give younger women affected by cancer in the ACT and surrounding region a place to belong. It raised awareness of the unique challenges younger women face, worked to close the gaps in support, and strived to make a positive difference.

🌸

Who it was for

Women under 50 dealing with cancer — and, as the group grew, young carers of people with cancer.

☀️

Why it mattered

Younger women often face different things: young children, careers, body image, dating and fertility decisions that have to be made fast.

💜

What it offered

Peer support, friendship, laughter and a safe place to share — online and at catch-ups around Canberra.

Our story
I don't want anyone going through cancer to ever feel alone.— Beth Lefevre, founder

Beth was 33, on maternity leave with four-month-old twins, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While going through treatment she searched for other younger women who understood what she was facing — and couldn't find a group like that in Canberra. So she started one.

What began as a Facebook page grew into Canberra's first peer-support group for younger women with cancer, officially launched in March 2021. Beth also helped advocate for better access to fertility preservation for young cancer patients in the ACT.

In honour of Rowena

Early in her treatment Beth met Rowena Ianna in an oncology waiting room — a young mum going through her own cancer journey, who became her close friend and support. Rowena passed away in 2019. This group was created in her honour.

With the hope that everyone could have a Rowena.
